The Freedom of Obedience

Obedience is the act of yielding to the instructions, commands, or authority of another. For many people, the word carries a negative connotation. It can feel restrictive, burdensome, or controlling. I know it often does for my kids, and if I'm honest, it still can for me at times.

But I've recently begun to realize that obedience to the Father is quite the opposite.

Throughout Scripture, we see countless examples of men and women who walked in obedience. Moses remained faithful to God even when the Israelites repeatedly rebelled. David had multiple opportunities to kill Saul, yet refused because of his obedience to God's timing and authority. David trusted God's timing rather than taking matters into his own hands. Jesus Himself was obedient to the Father's plan all the way to the cross.

Obedience means doing everything God has called us to do and then surrendering what only He can do. There comes a point where our effort ends and our trust begins. When we have taken every step of obedience God has placed before us, we can release the outcome into His hands, knowing that the results belong to Him.

When we choose obedience and reach the end of our own strength, something incredible happens. We begin to see God's faithfulness in ways we never could have imagined. The Israelites stood trapped between Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea, and God made a way where there seemed to be none. Daniel was thrown into a den of lions, and God shut the mouths of the lions. Jesus died on the cross, and three days later He rose from the grave, defeating sin and death forever.

God does not call His people to obedience and then leave them hanging. That is not His character. Throughout Scripture, whenever God calls people into something beyond their own strength, He accompanies His calling with the promise of His presence and faithfulness. Again and again, God calls His people to step out in faith, reminding them that they are not walking alone.

The world often tells us that freedom is doing whatever we want, whenever we want. Scripture paints a different picture. True freedom is found in surrendering to the One who created us. The more we walk in obedience to God, the more we become free from fear, pride, anxiety, selfish ambition, and the need to control every outcome.

Obedience is not the loss of freedom; it is the pathway to freedom.

Obedience doesn't always look like the dramatic moments we read about in the Bible. More often, it looks ordinary. It may mean watching how we speak about others, being a better husband, wife, father, or mother. It may be praying for someone when you feel the Holy Spirit prompting you, serving a neighbor, or giving to the person standing on the street corner.

Most of our lives will never be recorded in a book. Much of what we do may never be noticed or celebrated by those around us. But none of it escapes the Father's attention. He sees every act of faithfulness, every quiet sacrifice, and every step of obedience.

The question is this: Where is God calling you to be more obedient?

Take a moment today and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what He wants you to see. Ask Him to show you the areas where He is inviting you to trust Him more deeply. As you walk in obedience, you'll discover that what once felt restrictive is actually where true freedom is found—walking closely with the Father, trusting His timing, and experiencing His presence every step of the way.
